"
We built our first house ourselves 33 years ago and I had been dreaming of building another house ever since. Finally, we were going to build our dream house after collecting notes for all those years and working with an architect for the last four years. Since I manage programs for a living and I am a detail-oriented person, my husband wondered whether any builder could make me happy and meet my standards. We broke ground in August 2009. After much searching and many interviews we selected Charlie Little of Fairhaven Homes in Round Hill, Virginia as the person who was going to see us through the whole process beginning to end.
"Recently, when I met a friend for lunch and she asked 'So tell me all the horror stories about your builder', I had to honestly say that I don’t have any. She was surprised and asked how had w
e managed this? I think that Charlie is the major reason we have survived and actually enjoyed the process:
"Charlie is our advocate and is very cost conscious with his experienced stable of vendors and contractors. He fights for quality materials, quality work, and fair prices as if it were his own home. He has made significant recommendations about how to make the house energy efficient and low maintenance. When the mechanical crew, dropped our furnace, he made them take it out and replace it even though the damage was mainly cosmetic. When the concrete was incorrectly poured for the front porch, he made them fix it.
"He really engages with us and wants very much to understand what we want. When circumstances come up, we discuss it as a team and we make a decision based on facts, constraints and cost. We talk almost every day with lots of e-mails in-between. He has been amazingly transparent about the process, giving us a detailed schedule and costing that gets updated. We even get copies of certain invoices so we know exactly what the vendors are charging us.
"He is very creative and detail-oriented, always giving us options based on his years of experience. When we had an issue with positioning a duct in one of the bedrooms, he suggested putting a bookcase underneath the duct so you hardly even notice the duct above it. He noticed that the backsplash in the kitchen would interfere with the electric plugs and changed it so that it looked better. He checked to make sure all of the moldings for the kitchen cabinets were exactly right so that we would not have to use odd size fillers.
"Finally, Charlie is a man of integrity who has been a true partner in this massive undertaking to build our home beautifully, which will stand the test of time. Our uncle, who built RFK Stadium, recommended for us not to build because he said all builders were crooks that did shoddy jobs. When he looked at the photo history of our house he was really impressed with the quality and workmanship. Charlie has certainly met our standards and I highly recommend him to anyone."
